A genetically altered virus has devastated the planet, supposedly the cure for cancer instead it kills 90% of the population,
1% have an immunity, and the rest become creatures who revert to animals becoming aggressive and fearing sunlight (dark seekers)
and kill all the survivors.
Robert Neville (Will Smith) is a survivor, he is also a virologist. He is desperately trying to live up to the Time Magazine cover that we see of him in an early seen proclaiming him to be mankinds 'Saviour'. Having seen his wife and daughter die he is struggling to fulfil his promise to them that he will create a cure. The film follows him as he tries to survive and as he tries thousands of permutations on the virus in an effort to find a cure.
In the final moments of the film as he is about to be killed by the Dark seekers Neville realises that he has found a cure,
and he gives his life so that that cure can be carried to the last surviving colony of humans by Anna and her sun Ethan who
in response to his message have found him to prove he is not the only survivor. Anna has faith despite the situations and
says that God has a plan. Initially skeptical Neville final concedes that the reason she found him was to take the vaccine
to the colony so that it can be produced and used.
The film ends not with Nevilles death which saves Anna and Ethan but with Anna's final voice over: "In 2009, a deadly virus burned through our civilization, pushing humankind to the edge of extinction. Dr. Robert Neville dedicated his life to the discovery of a cure and the restoration of humanity. On September 9th, 2012, at approximately 8:49 P.M., he discovered that cure. And at 8:52, he gave his life to defend it. We are his legacy. This is his legend. Light up the darkness."
One man dedicating his life to cure a disease which decimated earth, one man whose blood, used to create the cure, secured the future. Neville's actions cannot but remind you of those of Jesus, who gave his blood to be the answer to a problem that infects 6 billion, that unlike KV has a 100% kill rate - sin. Rev 1:5-7 "Grace and peace to you from...Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the first born of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood..."
Jesus however, though he gave his life to save others had the power as God to take it again, to prove that he has mastery over death, to prove that sin is defeated and the cure provided through his blood and sacrifice. And his followers are given that antidote grace and told just as Anna was to be his legacy and go and "light up the darkness".
